Port Stephens Beach House

Situated on the water’s edge in Salamander Bay, Port Stephens, this architecturally designed mid-1990s residence enjoys uninterrupted views across the bay toward the Shoal Bay headland. Originally used as a holiday rental, the home is now undergoing a thoughtful renovation to become a full-time residence for a client with a deep connection to the sea and a passion for fishing.

With floor-to-ceiling glazing and generous outdoor spaces that interface directly with the waterfront, the project reimagines the property as a refined coastal retreat that balances luxury, material richness and the relaxed rhythm of seaside living.

The interior design draws inspiration from the client’s relationship with the ocean. Blue Venetian plaster, striking Blue Roma quartzite from Brazil, and accents of brass and stainless steel mesh introduce layered textures reminiscent of maritime materials. Cabinetry in blue aniline-dyed crown cut American oak veneer, paired with milled stainless steel kitchen joinery, reflects the project’s emphasis on craftsmanship and detail.

The upper level of the home is organised as an open sequence of kitchen, dining and living spaces, carefully oriented to maximise the expansive waterfront views and natural light. This layout strengthens the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless dialogue between the house and the bay beyond.

Currently under construction, the renovation is being undertaken in stages. Initial works focus on the entry, staircase and expansive open plan living areas, with further updates to the remaining upper level scheduled for late 2024. Once complete, the four bedroom, three and a half bathroom home will support a lifestyle centred around family, entertaining and the tranquillity of waterfront living in Port Stephens.
