Darlinghurst Apartment
Interior Design and Renovation in Historic Inner Sydney
Situated in Darlinghurst, within one of Sydney’s most historic precincts and overlooking the city skyline, this apartment forms part of a sensitive redevelopment surrounding the original Gate Keepers Cottage, directly opposite the National Art School.
The original apartment featured a tired interior fit out that was completely stripped back. Dated elements were removed and replaced with a layered palette of colour and texture, allowing the space to feel more expressive and contemporary.
A key objective of the design was to create a sense of transition from the intensity of the city below. Colour became the primary tool for achieving this, softening the interior and creating a calm, immersive environment.
The repeated lines and grooves used throughout the apartment respond directly to the building’s architecture. External louvres on the façade cast dramatic shadows throughout the day, and this principle was echoed internally through custom joinery, wallpaper in the primary bedroom and even the detailing of a bespoke rug.
In the kitchen, dramatic marble slabs introduce a sense of intimacy and theatre. The expressive veining moves like clouds across the surface, reinforcing the idea of creating a refuge from the city outside.
With the addition of a fireplace and carefully concealed elements throughout the apartment, the interior reveals moments of luxury and discovery, offering something new to notice each time the space is experienced.
